Mar. 7 Wed. THIRD ANNUAL WORLD READ ALOUD DAY at BOOKS OF WONDER. The Children's Book Council is partnering with LitWorld on their third annual World Read Aloud Day at Books of Wonder in NYC!
Throughout the day, authors (including current National Ambassador for Young People's Literature WALTER DEAN MYERS and Ambassador Emeritus KATHERINE PATERSON) will be appearing in 90-minute slots at Books of Wonder to read aloud, sign books, and answer questions. The event will be streamed live online, so that children in LitClubs worldwide (including sites in Kenya, Iraq, Sierra Leone, and the Philippines), and folks outside of the NY-area can participate. Last year’s World Read Aloud Day reached more than 60 countries, all 50 states and over 200,000 participants.

In Page By Paige, Paige Turner has just moved to New York with her family, and she's having some trouble adjusting to the big city. In the pages of her sketchbook, she tries to make sense of her new life, including trying out her secret identity: artist. As she makes friends and starts to explore the city, she slowly brings her secret identity out into the open, a process that is equal parts terrifying and rewarding.
After the reading, kids will participate in a craft time called Mirror Self Portraits. No special artistic skills are necessary! Oct. 27 Sat. 2-3pm NYPL CHILDREN'S LITERARY SALON presents CROCKETT JOHNSON AND RUTH KRAUSS: How an Unlikely Couple Found Love, Dodged the FBI, and Transformed Children's Literature.
An illustrated talk by PHILIP NEL, focusing on Johnson and Krauss in the 1950s, the period in which they reinvent the modern picture book, and the FBI places them under surveillance. Working with legendary Harper editor Ursula Nordstrom, Johnson publishes Harold and the Purple Crayon (1955), and Krauss begins her decade-long collaboration with Maurice Sendak, creating the groundbreaking A Hole Is to Dig (1952), A Very Special House (1953) and six others. And FBI builds a file on Johnson, opening his mail, monitoring his bank account, and noting the names of people who visited or phoned.
