In Page By Paige, Paige Turner has just moved to New York with her family, and she's having some trouble adjusting to the big city. In the pages of her sketchbook, she tries to make sense of her new life, including trying out her secret identity: artist. As she makes friends and starts to explore the city, she slowly brings her secret identity out into the open, a process that is equal parts terrifying and rewarding.
After the reading, kids will participate in a craft time called Mirror Self Portraits. No special artistic skills are necessary! With a background in art education, Laura Lee (http://whoislauralee.blogspot.com/) specializes in leading activities that foster introspection as well as cultivate creativity.

Sept. 09, 2011 - Jan. 29, 2012 THE JEWISH MUSEUM presents The Snowy Day and the Art of Ezra Jack Keats, the first major exhibition in this country to pay tribute to award-winning author and illustrator Ezra Jack Keats (1916–1983), whose beloved children’s books include Whistle for Willie, Peter’s Chair, and The Snowy Day—the first modern full-color picture book to feature an African-American protagonist. Published in 1962, at the height of the civil rights movement in America, the book went on to become an inspiration for generations of readers, transforming children’s literature forever.
The exhibition features over 80 original works by the artist, from preliminary sketches and dummies or preparatory books, to final paintings and collages, including examples of Keats’s most introspective but less-known output inspired by Asian art and poetry. One of the spaces in the galleries will be transformed into a reading room for visitors of all ages inspired by Keats's art and stories. LOCATION: The Jewish Museum, 1109 5th Ave at 92nd St., NYC

Feb. 1, 2012 THE PEN/PHYLLIS NAYLOR WORKING WRITER FELLOWSHIP of $5,000 is offered annually to an author of children's or young-adult fiction. The Fellowship has been developed to help writers whose work is of high literary caliber but who have not yet attracted a broad readership. The Fellowship is designed to assist a writer at a crucial moment in his or her career to complete a book-length work-in-progress.

Feb. 1, 2012 THE PEN/STEVEN KROLL AWARD was established in memory of Steven Kroll to acknowledge the distinct literary contributions of picture book writers. Kroll, a former PEN Trustee and long-time Chair of PEN’s Children’s/Young Adult Book Authors Committee, was also a prolific author of books for children. The annual award will be presented for the first time in 2012 and will confer a prize of $5,000. It will acknowledge an American or U.S.-based writer for an exceptional story illustrated in a picture book. The winner will be chosen by a panel of three judges, who will be selected by PEN’s Awards Committee in consultation with PEN’s Children’s/Young Adult Book Authors Committee, as well as the donor for the award, Kathleen Beckett, Kroll’s widow. No Deadline - Publishers LEE & LOW have a new imprint, Tu Books, which is open to unsolicited submissions. They focus on diverse fantasy and science fiction for middle graders and young adult, particularly stories that feature people of color as main characters.
